JesusCameToSaveTheWorld3Yes, the world is in a chaotic mess. “Why doesn’t God come down and do something about it?” you ask. “If God is love, how come there’s such cruelty in the world?” I’m weary of hearing that God can’t be real because of all these serious problems in our world. Like we didn’t do anything at all to cause these problems? Like war, racial hatred, violence, crime, poverty just happen while we’re innocently living our lives. Even if God waved a magic wand and fixed everything perfect, we’d be sure to take it and mess it up again.

It’s almost like there’s an intense greediness that’s infiltrating the very structure of our society. Like tuning into the one radio signal with a hedonistic focus on instant gratification. “Rip off who you can, just don’t get caught.” Why does being an arrogant bad-ass appeal to anybody? What is behind all that?

Light:DarkPerhaps there is something pulling our strings. Maybe there’s an invisible/off-earth illuminati out to get us, trying to destroy us, trying to take over our planet? OK, OK, you say. Don’t get wound up on crazy stuff.

Yet, there are always opposites that we have to choose between. There’s light, there’s dark. There’s pain there’s sorrow. Good/bad, up/down, black/white, love/hate, give/take, right/wrong. What would be the opposite of God?  Maybe God’s not the only superpower behind the scenes!

Ifchoose-your-own-path we can personify the presence of love, than it is God. If we can personify an invisible destructive force of darkness, then it would be called Satan. Our unwillingness to acknowledge the existence of an evil force gives that entity an insidious, powerful advantage over us.

Actually, to believe in a devil who’s against our spiritual growth would make a lot of sense for five reasons!

 

  1. We’d have someone to blame besides God for the problems in the world.
  2. God wouldn’t be responsible for any of the bad things that happen, and could be only a God of love.
  3. We wouldn’t have to entirely blame ourselves.
  4. Verses in the Bible that talk about fallen angels from heaven (outer space) could be taken literally.

  5. But best of all: All of humanity would have a common enemy to fight against!
