HOW TO HEAR GOD’S LANGUAGE: THROUGH SYNCHRONICITY

They started singing. My expectation was a Caribbean stereotype of lively black spirituals. Because you see, I was in a funky little village church in Curacao and the congregation was more than half black! But what shattered me to the core
was the solemn melody that spewed forth – an intimate personal glitch to the fabric of my reality! It was the same musical notes to a song I had made up over 30 years ago. And I had sung that prayerful melody while standing in a forest overlooking the sparkling creek meandering down our ranch meadow!

That my friend is sacred synchronicity, the language God uses to interface with the physical mind to get our attention. It got my attention. These notes rang out so pure, my breath caught in the back of my throat from the exquisite sameness to my original song. In fact, I knew where each next note was going to land on the scale!

Yet, here on this vacation island of Curacao, these words were sung in Spanish. I don’t think they matched my lyrics, although perhaps they did, because I understood a few of them. My little melody has never been published. Yet now it appears, sung to the glory of God thousands of miles away from where I first sang it. Here’s a few verses of mine sung as a prayer:

Oh Lord, This is my life. Help me please to live it right.
Oh Lord these are my loves. Help me to love them with love from above.
I give you my life, to make what you will. To overcome sorrow and be happy still.
Your spirit I need for courage to last. To feel your closeness, is all that I ask.

What did this phenomenon mean? God’s language is so deeply personal. To me it meant that God was never going to lose me. That no matter where I roamed, how I changed, what lifestyle I led, he would find me there. I just had to stop being so busy and seek him out. For some people that’s what church is for. For others, God’s presence is found in the wilds of nature. I find him in all kinds of places even in this little Catholic church in Curacao.

But synchronicity is his language! My daughter has taught me to look at the anomalies in life, the odd phenomenon that happen, in order to “hear” messages from God in spirit form. I think this is the universal medium that Spirit uses to communicate across the physical/spirit barriers of our substance.

And you know what? I just looked up from typing these last sentences and glanced out across the turquoise waters of Westpunt Bay and right where I gazed a large fished jumped out of the water and skipped twice across the surface. From the balcony of our rented Airbnb home for the week, it was the first time I had seen a flying fish. Why did it happen right that instant, right where my eyes hit the water?

Because I’m learning God’s language! He speaks through acts of nature. What intimately convinced me is the fact that another similar thing happened on the banks of the Nechako River, in Prince George, BC decades ago. At that time I tearfully asked God to prove to me that he was real. Then a fish jumped up out of river right where I was looking and as soon as I doubted that significance, it happened again in the same place. God talks to me with fish jumping! You might laugh. I did – but with joy! That again is synchronicity, the language of God across the span of time.

Do you know, I think God tries hard to get our attention. The least we can do is “listen up” and acknowledge his interest and the deep caring he has for us. I hope he catches your attention soon with some crazy synchronicity. Don’t laugh it off as a coincidence, but consider that it may have a significant meaning to you personally. Then be ready to interface ….with the Spirit of God!
