I have finally recognized FAITH as a source of power. It is not just a religious belief in God, or Buddha, or Allah, but it’s a tangible plug-in to power! But how do we increase the voltage???
Jesus mentored his apostles on how to co-create using spiritual laws. Sometime during the teaching process, they finally recognized faith as a source of power for their personal lives, and they wanted more of it.
The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea’, and it will obey you.” (Luke 17:5–6) KJV Bible
What a strange answer! Another time the apostles tried to heal an epileptic and found their words did not work. When the boy was brought to Jesus and healed, they asked Jesus afterward:
“Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:19–21) KJV Bible
Now, a mustard seed is one of the tiniest seeds there is. Does this mean we only need a small amount of faith? Not exactly, because according to Jesus the disciples actually did have a little bit of faith, but still they could not heal this boy. Instead Jesus showed them just how powerful faith can be in the absence of doubt.
These passages about moving mountains and uprooting mulberry trees are always overlooked in the Bible because they seem so outrageous. You seldom hear them spoken about from a church pulpit. Yet here is the key to understanding the quantum-leap characteristic faith has.¹
Even the Bible definition says, “Faith is being sure of what we hope for, certain of what we do not see.”²
But look! There is no “maybe” in this formula! There is no room for doubt because doubt and faith are antonyms! That’s the key.
They can’t be mixed. The power to change reality is either activated by our faith, or deactivated by our doubt. If they are both present, they cancel each other out, becoming neutral and powerless. (See part 4 of this series.)
Then how can you increase your faith to diminish your doubt? First I have to get to know God, in order to build faith in my authority to use His power. Then I step out and move mountains!
OK, OK, so I start with molehills. I start by planting the mustard seed in the ground. I water it, nurture it. I marvel at the tiny green sprout rising up out of the dirt. The key is to start. To conceive and believe; to send out a request; to talk it, walk it; and to take those first steps.
With use, I find my faith as a power source is increasing. I started small and saw some success. Now, I’m getting confident. There is something so exciting to see my goals manifested through faith in God as a personal source of power! God is good.
