We as humans live on just a small spec in the universe among billions of galaxies. Yet we have evolved to a point where human beings are the most important endangered species on our planet…because now in our twenty-first century we are capable of obliterating ourselves.

One button pushed, another one to retaliate, and the world as we know it – will be gone.

It seems obvious to me (and probably to you too) that there will be no peace on our planet until all people can agree on a set of universal standards for human conduct. Shared simple basic values in life.

Our justice system in the western world bases itself on the Judeo-Christian moral code of conduct first presented to us in the biblical Ten Commandments. But what if you are Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, agnostic or simple an atheist? Your value system might be quite different. Are there any higher moral principles that we can all agree on outside of religious doctrine? And if there are, how can we determine what they are?

To explore this we have to broaden our perspective. Just like when we are using Google Earth, we can zoom down from high above the planet and with eagle eye precision, zero in on the exact location where our own life is taking place. The physical details of the very houses we live in appear with amazing clarity! And that little spec of reality makes up a very small part of the town we live in, then the state or province we live in, the country, the continent and even the planet we live on. No matter what moral code we believe in, we are part of the whole.

Goggle earth fighting coupleIf there’s a God Being surely God is grand enough to “Google Earth” too, and see all our problems. From a celestial perspective, God would also see one human race with many diverse philosophies and religions, yet he could zoom down further to see the exact moral fibre of each of our lives.

Try it here! On Google Earth, that spec of humanity that I am living in touches those who I connect with. My yard runs into the neighbour’s yard so my actions may influence the guy next door, which might impact my neighbourhood, which may even make the news in our state or province. The action I choose could influence lots of other people and cause laws to be changed that affect the whole nation. The country we live in then takes on a personality and interacts with other countries. Now we are zooming out enough to see the very bullies on the playground of our planet.

Does it really matter what we do in our own spec of reality on this planet? Maybe I lie about things because it’s easier, I steal because I’m poor, or I assault others because they ticked me off. It’s so easy to defend our actions with a personal line of reasoning. Sure, we can do it, but is it right?

Values to ResultsTake that intended action you have in your mind, zoom out to a celestial perspective and ask yourself: “What would happen if everyone did this same thing?”

For example, if I run a red light, what would happen if everyone ran red lights? If I steal from others what would happen if everybody stole all the time? If whole nations stole wealth from other nations? If I manipulate and bully people to get what I want, what if everyone were bullies? What if your country is a bully on the world’s playground?  If all the countries in the world went to war…would we survive?

In other words, if something’s wrong for everyone to do, then it’s wrong for you and me to do. That is a universal, higher moral principle!
