We are so lucky to live in a world of modern conveniences and multi-choices of entertainment. We are living a fine life…but what are we living for?

That’s the big question. We have homes, enough to eat, and some leisure time to enjoy life, so why aren’t we satisfied? We believe in a God and hope this Source of higher intelligence knows what’s being played out on our planet. But what are we supposed to do in the meantime? Our world is such a mess…and we are just one in a crowd of billions of people.

I sit looking out of an upstairs window and view my world below. These thoughts drift through my mind as a ribbon of morning cloud passes gently over the landscape. In the early morning quiet time, I sometimes play a game to “hear” what God wants to communicate to me. Randomly, I open up a small book of the Bible to see what shows up on the page. Today the words are modern and almost audible to me:

“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.

Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand."  Matthew 5:13-15 The Message Bible

So we Christians ought to stand out in a crowd. We are supposed to be bold with our beliefs. Our values will shine out so that people notice. What’s a bowl of popcorn without salt?

No matter where we live, or what culture we live in, we want to stand up for higher principles and get noticed. We are the salt seasoning on a bland menu. We are God-colour! We’re supposed to shine God on the landscape of our realities.

By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Matthew 7:16 NIV Bible
