VICTORY OVER THE INVISIBLE ENEMY

The need for social distancing against an invisible enemy – hey, this reminds me of how I survived another scary time in my life decades ago.

Imagine yourself in isolation, one hundred miles from town on a secluded ranch in the Canadian wilderness… and seven months pregnant. That’s when my water broke; whether we were ready or not, our second son was coming.

My husband helped me lie on the back seat of our crew-cab pickup and then bounced down a hundred miles of gravel road to the nearest hospital. Along the way, I remember a gold-nugget verse. And I prayed: “Lord, you’re ‘my refuge and my fortress’; I will trust in you.”

• I was quickly admitted to the maternity ward, and my doctor told me my baby was no longer protected by the amniotic fluid and could be easily infected by dangerous invisible bacteria.
• Yet, I was given meds to stop my contractions because at only seven months old, the baby I still carried was so small his chances were not good for survival.

After the doctor left my hospital room, I had a good cry. Then I read the rest of the ancient passage about a ‘refuge and fortress’ that I had remembered. The verses were amazing and gave me a personalized answer to my specific fears:

Surely He will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; HIS faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. Psalms 91: 3-7 NIV

For nearly forty-eight hours, I huddled like a small bird in my hospital bed ‘under his wings’ of protection, just as I wrapped my arms around the child in my round womb waiting to be born. I was determined to hold God to his promise.

The rest of the verses in this wonderful psalm tell us how to build faith – a faith strong enough to protect ourselves from insidious, invisible enemies! God makes a promise to all of us:

If you say, ‘The Lord is my refuge,’ and you make the Most High your dwelling,
no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. Psalms 91: 8-10 NIV

Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. 

With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” Psalms 91: 14-16 NIV 

Are you still wondering what happened to me in the hospital? Two days later, the contractions wouldn’t stop despite the meds, and my son was born; he was only one month premature, a little over five pounds. After a few days in the incubator, I had him in my arms. He has since grown into a big, strapping gentle giant at over feet tall!

Today, we follow health guidelines for #wellness and observe social distancing to protect ourselves and others in #mindfulliving.

But I wanted to share my experience with you in our current time of invisible pestilence and invite you to join me.

Because I’m going to trust in my God again in the coming months…and HOLD HIM TO HIS PROMISES!
