We say Happy New Year but what will make us happy? In our western world, most of us have enough to live on while in other countries they continually struggle to find food and shelter. Some of us are set up with fine homes and good jobs but we may still struggle with the pressures of life. A few of us are extremely wealthy and yet even that doesn’t guarantee a state of happiness.

Viktor Emil Frankl in MANS SEARCH FOR MEANING stated it precisely, “People have enough to live by but nothing to live for; they have the means but no meaning.”

When we have something to live for, we can be happy anywhere. Because happiness is a by-product, for the way we live. There are celestial principles that will ensure our happiness and they also give us meaning to life.

“For example, when our children break the rules we’ve set for appropriate behavior within our families, we correct them and teach them a better way to behave in order to ensure their overall happiness. They may break rules quite frequently until they learn, but we love them anyway! In the same way from a celestial viewpoint, moral precepts have been given to us, not in harsh authority, but so we can be happy.” *

What are these celestial moral principles? Things like honesty, integrity, charity, justice, and loving your neighbour as yourself. If we develop these qualities in the coming new year, happiness will be the result. What is the meaning to life? To become more god-like, and make at least our little part of the planet a paradise.

I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your preceptsPsalm 119:44-46
