“Jesus saves you. The Bible tells me so.”
“Yah, but what does he save us from?”
It is pretty hard to wrap your head around that salvation term, isn’t it? Especially if you’ve heard the name, Jesus Christ, but never met the guy. His last name was not Christ. That’s a descriptive word his followers used and means – anointed with supernatural power. Jesus Christ engineered spiritual intelligence! Let’s put the story into contemporary terminology:
Suppose a talented scientist designed the most-advanced, most-realistic humanlike robot ever invented. Perhaps he’s pursuing this through government-funded research. He conceives a plan to make humanoid robots actually become living beings. These advanced creations would possess a personal sense of identity and their own power to reason, choose, and make decisions. However, to execute this plan, the scientist has to be willing to give up his own life in order to intervene and interface with his created robots. He has to lay aside all his superior rightful powers of existence and become little more than a machine himself. Then he will be required to confront an evil virus that weakens his robots. He will have to overcome these negative forces by his own preset rules for robotic creation, and in the end even allow the new metal species he created to go against him and finally kill him.
Then, in order to return to his powerfully advanced world, he will be required to trust in the authority of his supervisors, who hopefully can activate the right sequence to bring him back to his former existence as a prestigious scientist. If something goes amiss, or if the destructive forces are able to destroy him too, he might never return to his own reality. If his mission is successful, it will pave the way for creating living robotic progeny into the human plane of existence.
Now, this little story may not seem so crazy since current work in robotic science is focused on artificial intelligence. A branch of this research, called Strong AI, focuses on developing robots with the ability to perform intelligent actions that match human intelligence.¹
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross! Philippians 2:6–8 NIV Bible
In a sense, that is exactly what the great God species did. The celestial ambassador who volunteered for this mission on earth became Jesus Christ, and he was successful! When this immortal ambassador died a physical death, the way was paved to transform our limited physical existence into an eternal spiritual existence!
The bridge from human flesh to spirit essence is now possible through metamorphosis to a higher level of existence. This was the catalyst, the next step in evolution for the human race: receiving eternal life.¹
He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet, to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:11–13 NIV Bible
What did Jesus Christ have to do in order to bring about this transformation? He had to confront the destructive forces weakening us humans.¹
